BMI Calculator

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a screening tool that estimates whether a person’s weight is appropriate for their height. It is calculated using height and weight to classify individuals into categories such as underweight, healthy weight, overweight, or obesity. While BMI is useful for assessing general health risk, it does not directly measure body fat or account for muscle mass, age, or body composition.

  • Below 18.5 — Underweight
  • 18.5 – 24.9 — Healthy Weight
  • 25.0 – 29.9 — Overweight
  • 30.0 and above — Obese

BMI Has Its Limits

While Body Mass Index (BMI) is a useful screening tool, it does not measure body fat percentage or distinguish between muscle and fat. As a result, athletes, older adults, and individuals with higher muscle mass may receive BMI classifications that do not accurately reflect their overall health. BMI should be considered one of several health indicators and interpreted alongside factors such as body composition, waist circumference, fitness level, and medical history.
